Saving Daylight - 4,187 Views

In case you haven’t heard, it’s time to move our clocks forward. An easy way to remember is we spring forward and fall backward. So this Sunday don’t forget to move your clocks ahead by an hour. I have to admit, I didn’t even know Daylight Saving Time was upon us. I just happened to notice a reminder sign in the store located in the building where I work. There are a lot of pros and cons to this tradition that was initially proposed by a man named George Vernon Hudson in 1895. Since that time, many countries have used it at various times, most consistently since the energy crises of the 1970s.

In my humble opinion, if we did away with the practice, I don’t think it would be a deal breaker. In fact, I’m not surprised we haven’t banned it all together. I’m sure the countless people who will show up late to church this Sunday and late to work on Monday, might be willing to sign a petition. On the other hand, I do like the idea of it being daylight when I get home. At present, when I leave the house a little after five in the morning, it’s still dark out, and when I return home it’s dark. The only time I get to see my house and lovely landscape is on Saturday’s. What I’m not looking forward to is losing that hour of sleep! It’s nothing like snuggling under a warm blanket getting some good snooze. Invariably I wake up before the alarm goes off and I usually have an hour or two to sleep. That won’t be the case Monday. Yikes!!! Then there’s the task of changing all the clocks. Well, actually we’ll only have to change three-the clock in the kitchen, the one in my car, and the one I use to wake up each morning. My husband is retired and no longer uses an alarm, lucky him! Our desktop computer, cable box, and phones automatically make the time adjustment.

I, like most people, love when the time goes back an hour. I remember back in the day when I would go clubbing. It was nothing like knowing you had an extra hour to get your groove on. Well, we still had to be out of the club by 2am, but it was nice to know technically it was just 1am. Boy those were the days. It’s funny how our priorities change with age. Back then it was about having time to hang out at the club, now it’s about making it to church on time. One year there was a special event at church and I wanted to be on time, but the morning got away from me. I remember praying to God to stop time like Joshua did in the Bible. When I finally made it to church, there were very few cars in the parking lot. When I went into the lobby, I noticed it was relatively empty. Then I got a glimpse of the clock. I was early! I had forgotten the time had moved back. I was so thrilled. Wow, in a way my prayer had been answered, Lol!.

Well, I hope this blog serves as a reminder to roll your clocks forward Sunday, or your might find yourself rolling out of bed an hour late on Monday! Have a blessed weekend.
